In the rapidly evolving landscape of wearable technology, understanding the user experience is paramount to creating successful products. Concrete stands at the forefront of this crucial area, offering deep expertise in research and design for innovative devices like smartwatches. Our rigorous methodologies and insightful analysis provide invaluable guidance for companies looking to develop compelling and user-centric smartwatch experiences.
Unveiling the Apple Watch User Journey
Concrete's commitment to understanding wearable technology is exemplified by our comprehensive Apple Watch Longitudinal Study. Conducted for Intel's NDG group, this study aimed to capture the user experience of a brand-new, highly anticipated smartwatch from initial expectations through long-term adoption.
Recognizing the unique opportunity presented by the launch of the Apple Watch, Concrete's UX research team embarked on a detailed investigation involving 90 participants over an extended period. Utilizing Dscout’s mobile app, we collected two key types of information at critical checkpoints: pre-order, 1st 24 hours, 1-2 weeks, 30 days, and 120 days. These data points included:
Experience feedback gathered through short videos and open-ended survey questions.
UX metrics such as Net Promoter Score (NPS), System Usability Scale (SUS), and User Experience Questionnaire (UXQ).
The extensive dataset, comprising over 500 videos, open-ended survey responses, and UX ratings, was meticulously analyzed to identify impactful features, unmet expectations, and desired new functionalities. This in-depth analysis allowed Concrete to understand the nuances of user journeys with a novel wearable device over time.
Impact and Continued Relevance
The insights generated from the Apple Watch Longitudinal Study have had a lasting impact:

The findings were used to refine data collection methods for UX measures, allowing for a more focused approach to identifying essential and impactful questions.
The wearables team continues to utilize the study as a benchmark and reference point for understanding the user experience of wrist-worn wearables. This demonstrates the enduring value and applicability of Concrete's research.
The study's findings were presented at the HCII conference, further validating Concrete's expertise in the field.
